Trims

There are four trim levels for the Ford Ranger: XL, XLT, Lariat, and Raptor.

XL: Ridging on 17-inch wheels, this base trim comes with a fair amount of tech. There are LED headlights, a digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch touchscreen, and a six-speaker stereo.

XLT: By adding more convenience features, the XLT can offer LED bed lighting, a 120-volt household-style outlet, a wireless phone charging pad, and cloud-based navigation.

Lariat: For a more luxurious drive, the Lariat has you covered. This mid-tier trim offers leather upholstery, a 12-inch vertically oriented touchscreen, heated front seats, and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Raptor: As the highest trim, the Raptor is geared toward off-road travel. As such, it comes with the more powerful V6 engine. It also has 17-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, front and rear tow hooks, and added off-road drive modes.

 

Performance

Powering every new Ranger model is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft of torque. The engine is attached to a 10-speed automatic transmission and is available with rear or four-wheel drive. Arriving later this summer will be a more powerful turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 that outputs 315 hp and 400 lbs.-ft of torque.

With the current setup, the Ford Ranger can carry about 1,800 max and tow around 7,500 pounds. Though with four-wheel drive equipped, the payload cap drops to about 1,700 pounds.

Technology

Throughout the various trims of the Ford Ranger, Spring Valley, and Princeton, drivers will find copious amounts of tech. There's Ford's latest Sync 4 interface, which is run on a base 10.1-inch screen or a larger vertically oriented 12.4-inch monitor. Both displays provide access to various features and controls, including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, in-dash navigation, and a new zone-lighting feature that turns on lights on the outside of the truck. A wireless smartphone charging pad and SiriusXM satellite are also offered.

Safety

To ensure passenger safety on and off the road, Ford has equipped the Ranger with several advanced driver-aids. These include forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking. Higher trims offer a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

Design

The exterior of the Ford Ranger is that of any midsize pickup. The interior, however, receives a new modern look, complete with a digital gauge and honeycomb-patterned air vents. There are also new interior storage options, including a hidden upper glovebox, larger door pocket cubbies, and storage located under the rear seat. Plus, many of the vehicle's physical buttons and controls have been removed and integrated into the infotainment system.

Fuel Economy

In their testing, the EPA found that the Ranger's rear-wheel drive four-cylinder model got an estimated fuel economy of 21 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. With four-wheel drive, both numbers drop by one mpg. With the V6, the Ranger is rated for 19 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.
